Linux is an operating system that can be used or which can run on a large variety of hardware. Linux has the ability to run devices quite simple as cell phones, watches etc. It can work on computer as well of course.
Overview of Linux and Windows:
Windows and Linux both are operating system. Windows in owned by Microsoft while Linux is not owned by any single company. Linux comes from many different companies like red hat, Mandrake, Novell etc. Windows and Linux both are available in server and desktop editions.
GUI:
Linux and windows are both GUI operating systems. Windows when compared has better GUI then Linux. However, it has been found working fast on catching up the repute.
Command Line:
Both of them include command line edge. In windows it is known as DOS and in Linux it is known as SHELL. Linux shell is far better than the DOS prompt. If offers a lot more features which are not available or possible in case of Windows. It supports many commands like Korn, Bourne, and BASH etc.
Cost:
When it comes to cost, Linux costs less then windows. It is usually free or cheap. Anyone can install Linux and start using it, only the technical support would charge its profit. On the other hand, windows are expensive enough. You have to pay for the software first and then again for the technical support. Plus, windows restrict you to use only one copy at one single computer while you are free when using Linux.
Security:
There in so security in windows. When using windows, installing an antivirus, antispyware is a must. Though Microsoft comes with great spyware and malware products but they take a lot of space of your computer. On the other hand, Linux doesn’t have these issues. You don’t really have to install any antivirus or spyware when working on Linux. It is easy for hackers to work on Windows while Linux can prove to be a tough competition.
Hardware support:
Basically windows were designed for machines based in Intel. So it runs on specific versions not more. While Linux can work on a variety of hardware and can support old legacy as well.
Network Support:
When it comes to network, Linux can beat windows. Windows were technically never designed for internet and Linux was designed for internet. So when it comes to network support, Linux is considered to be far better than windows.
Help:
When it comes to Linux documentation and help, it is quite good. However, when it comes to windows you don’t really need to check the documentation or help. It has already been quite helpful. So at this point, both can be equally rated. Linux might need a little help while working on it but the help is good so customers need not to worry about the queries.
This was the small comparison between Windows and Linux. Frankly, both of them are giving each other a tough competition.
